Overview
Jarl Uric is the former High King of Lagadagr who stepped down from power six years ago after witnessing the mysterious murder of his son Eric Valorin during the Festival of Blades. Once a powerful ruler who was preparing to pass the kingship to his noble heir, Uric’s life was shattered when Eric inexplicably froze mid-combat and was killed by Iler Ruthgar.
In his grief, Uric abdicated the throne and took the position of Jarl of Fior, the agricultural village in northern Lagadagr. For six years, he endured Iler’s tyrannical rule, watching his people suffer under crushing tribute demands while he wasted away from sorrow. His hair turned white as winter, his beard grew thick as bear fur, and his body became emaciated - skin and bones carrying the weight of loss and helplessness.
Despite his physical decline, Uric retained his wisdom, strategic thinking, and deep care for all of Lagadagr’s people. When the party delivered Eric Valorin’s epic poem to him, he granted them two tournament blessings and placed his hope in their ability to defeat Iler and restore his granddaughter Cara to rightful leadership.
Appearance
- Age: Elderly, visibly weakened by grief
- Hair: White as winter (changed from grief)
- Beard: Thick as bear fur, gray-white
- Build: Emaciated, skin and bones
- Posture: Sits in wooden chair, surrounded by concerned villagers
- Bearing: Still carries authority despite physical decline
- Eyes: Deep with sorrow and loss
Personality
Uric is deeply mournful over his son’s death but maintains wisdom and understanding. He opposes violence philosophically but accepts its necessity when justice demands it. His care extends to all of Lagadagr’s people, not just his own village - a true king’s heart despite no longer holding the title.
He is tired but still engaged in leadership, providing what protection he can to Fior’s struggling population. His appreciation for courtesy and respect shows his noble upbringing and values. Strategic thinking remains sharp even as his body fails; he recognized the party’s potential and invested his remaining blessings in their success.
Uric carries guilt for stepping down rather than fighting Iler directly, but his love for Cara stayed his hand - he couldn’t risk her losing both father and grandfather. His statement “I do appreciate… I trust that you know that I’m a capable man” reveals pride struggling with limitation.
